Avalanche Awareness Training
Avalanches
For everybody setting foot in the mountains avalanches are a timeless haunt that have to be taken into consideration and be reckoned with.
For centuries people living in the mountains and people travelling through the mountains have had to deal with the life threatening forces created by snow raging the down the mountainsides at incredible speeds.
Every year through research progress is made in detection, prevention and safety measures. But nevertheless avalanches are still responsible for taking countless lives every year.
Every year millions of people venture into the mountains. Winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, climbing and snowshoeing are increasing in popularity and all involve entering the arena of the “White Death”. Each year avalanches claim more than 150 lives worldwide... and rising!
How can Avalanche Awareness Training help you?
Avalanches conditions are created from a number of factors:
• Weather
• Snowfall
• Temperature
• Wind direction
• Snowpack conditions
• Slope angle
• Slope orientation
• Terrain
• Vegetation
Being aware and educated to how these factors effect avalanche conditions can make a life saving difference.
Avalanche safety for you can be split into three important stages:
• At home – planning:
where to go, when to go and who should go.
• On the mountain – appropriate experience, equipment,
using the equipment, assessing snow conditions,
map reading, reading the weather and making
sound judgements.
• Avalanche – what to do when the worst happens?
Incident procedure and management.
Our courses focus on training you in these areas helping you to make better judgements and actions.
