Plas y brenin

Character and professional reference – Dougal Tavener

I write this reference in my role as Chief Executive at Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre, Snowdonia, North Wales. I am an IFMGA Mountain Guide with experience of alpine guiding and formal mountain qualification training since 1988. Plas y Brenin is the British Government owned National Mountain Centre which oversees the training schemes for UK leaders and instructors of mountaineering activities. Plas y Brenin is also the delivery centre for summer elements of the British Association of Mountain Guides (BMG) training scheme and delivers the UK European Mountain Leader courses affiliated to the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA).

Dougal Tavener worked as an instructor of Mountaineering, rock climbing and white water kayaking activities at Plas y Brenin. He worked on a range of personal skill development and leadership qualification courses. The course participants vary in age from children to adults, but all attend courses here in order to learn skills, techniques and practical knowledge, and gain certification from the appropriate governing body. Courses vary in length form two to six days and there is a requirement to follow clear programme objectives and ensure progression for students.

Dougal worked primarily on Alpine rock climbing courses, Mountain Leadership Certificate training and assessment courses as well as the rock climbing Single Pitch Award. Both courses are accredited by the British Mountaineering Council.
Safe working practices are an essential aspect of instruction at this establishment, and Dougal always maintained the highest standards of client and personal care.

Since moving to the Austrian Alps in 2005 He has amassed a number of classic routes first ascents in both winter and summer. During 2007 he competed in the Winter Climbing Championship held in Saas Fee, and was the climbing member of the Austrian team which won the 2009 Nissan Outdoor Winter Games held In Chamonix.
As an ex Junior World Cup Kayaker, he has competed at all levels of the sport; most recent in the Extreme Kayak World Championships held in Oetz in 2008.

Dougal has a friendly outgoing personality and I have no hesitation in recommending him to individual or corporate clients alike.
